Ergonomics and the electric desk: How to set up your workspace?

Ergonomics is, in the most general terms, working conditions adapted to the anatomical capabilities of humans. An electric desk has much in common with an ergonomic workstation, as it creates a place conducive to comfortable, safe and effective work. However, before you sit down to it, take care of the proper positioning of the furniture.

The electric desk allows you to work in a sitting and standing position - use both functions

The variability of position during the many hours of work performed at the desk, has a beneficial effect on the health, well-being and efficiency of the employee. Therefore, take advantage of the opportunity that an electric desk allows you to work sitting and standing, and take care of this variability of position while performing your duties. In a modern model of the desk, you can easily program both of these heights, so that at the press of just one button, the desk will automatically set itself to the right level.

Sitting and standing, or alternating work, is beneficial to health. It eliminates back and shoulder pain, muscle tension, leg numbness, lethargy and general discomfort. It also protects against serious heart disease, or type 2 diabetes. By adjusting your desk once to a sitting position and once to a standing position, you will affect the productivity and quality of your work. You will also focus better on individual activities.

In our collection of electric desks you are sure to find a model to your liking. We have desks equipped with a modern mechanism, an efficient and quiet motor and an intuitive control panel. Choose a model and then configure this desk according to your needs.

Adjust the height of the desk to your height

Whether you choose to work sitting or standing, however, set the desk top at a height that works with your height. If you are about 170 cm tall, set the desk top at a height of 72-75 cm. If your height exceeds 180 cm, set it at a height of 80-85 cm. However, it is known that you may have a completely different height than in the examples given. Therefore, adjust the height of the tabletop so that you can not only sit or stand comfortably at it, but also assume a correct, healthy posture.

So set the tabletop at such a height that:

  • your eyesight is at a distance of 50-75 cm from the monitor,
  • your back is quite straight,
  • your back with your legs in flexion formed a right angle,
  • legs bent at the knees formed a slight obtuse angle,
  • hands were parallel to the tabletop, and bent at the elbows formed a slight obtuse angle.

Adjusting the tabletop to a standing position:

  • stand on level legs and with a straight back,
  • place the monitor at a distance of 50-70 cm from your sight,
  • ensure that your hands are parallel to the tabletop, and bent at the elbows form an obtuse angle.

Position the electric desk correctly in relation to the window

Having already known what position you can assume when working at an electric desk, and how you should adjust the height of the desk top, take care still, to correctly position this piece of furniture in relation to the window. You can do this in two ways.

Positioning the desk in front of the window

By placing the electric desk under the window, you will save space. However, this is not the only advantage. If, for example, your room has a northern exposure and you sit with your back to the window, your tabletop will be illuminated by the natural light coming through the glass. If the window is oriented to the east or south, there will be quite a contrast between the bright surface of the window and the dark screen of the monitor on your desk. As a result of this, your eyesight will tire faster and your visual comfort will be greatly reduced. Then sit at your desk facing the window.

Position the desk perpendicular to the window

If your room allows it, position the electric desk perpendicular to the window. This will ensure that the workspace is well lit. This position will help you avoid glare. It is important in this case that you yourself do not obstruct the light coming through the window. If you are a left-handed person, the window should be on the right side. If right-handed, the window must be located on your left side.
